To celebrate the overwhelming success of the first ever W H Davies Young Poets Competition, an exhibition of all the work entered is being held at The Project Space in Newport High Street.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the death of Newport’s legendary tramp poet, W H Davies, The Riverfront Theatre held a poetry competition for writers aged 16 years and under, with a cash prize of £100 on offer for the winning poet.

Writers were asked to consider the opening lines of Davies’ poem Leisure, and compose work on the theme of nature. Hundreds of entries were received and all will now be displayed at The Project Space as part of a free exhibition.

The winner of the first ever W H Davies Young Poets Competition was Diesel Williams for his poem ‘A View of Nature’.

Competition judge, Paul Chambers, said: “We have been overwhelmed by both the quality and quantity of work submitted. Congratulations go to Diesel Williams for his winning poem – a superb composition on the power and beauty of nature, with a poetic technique not too dissimilar from Davies himself! We very much hope to be able to continue with and develop the competition to provide encouragement and incentive for our young writers.”

The exhibition will run from Monday 05 until Saturday 31 October.
