#NametheWhale update. Vote now for The Big Splash 2014 !

big splash Half term workshops

At The Project Space we have genuinely been amazed with all the names our visitors and supporters have suggested. If you have not already seen the article, take a look here for more info about the #NameTheWhale project. We have had over 50 submissions via the Project Space, the twitter #Namethewhale hash tag and the Facebook account, sadly a few were added in the venue that had no accompanying name, so please re submit via twitter, or in the message box and give us your crazy name for the whale and your name and age so we can identify you in case you win the great prize, which by the way has been donated by the kind guys at Newport Transport. They are offering a 5 person day ticket to use on one of their summer trips! You will also receive a certificate to claim your prize and that you officially named the whale 😀 Trips can be selected from here and here

You may pick your 5 favourite names from the giant list below. The 5 most popular whale names will go into the prize draw where on Thursday 29th midnight the poll will close. We are having a procession with #NameTheWhale on Saturday 31st  from 1pm and will have the winner announced on the community music stage by 5pm. We will start at the Project Space from 10am (Come and join us) and we will make our way to the ‘red wave’.

Half term holiday workshops at The Project Space - 26th-30th May 2014

Half term holiday workshops at The Project Space – 26th-30th May 2014

Roll up roll up! It’s the week before Newport’s Big Splash festival kicks off in our city, and to help get us all in the festival mood, The Project Space are running daily make and take workshops through out the half term holidays leading up to the main event.

Workshops start this Saturday and bank holiday Monday with drop in sessions for the whole family to make recycled junk instruments and balloon costumes between 10am – 4pm, with beach themed colouring in also available on the day!

On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, we’re joined by Tony Balloonman ( http://www.balloon-man.webs.com) who’ll be giving us some expert tips on making balloon costumes to wear on the big day.

On Friday, we’ll also be making our own hula hoops and practising our moves, getting in the party spirit for Saturday.

For the parade itself, meet at The Project Space at 12:30 ready to Samba our way down to Newport’s Red Wave guided by our lovely event stewards – more info on the picture below. After a successful first workshop in The Project Space with mosaic artist Stephanie Roberts and Naz Syed, we are ecstatic to announce that Newport’s happiest whale is about to go international.

On Saturday 10th May 2014, Steph will be joined by international mosaic artists Rachel Silver (New Zealand), Sé Van Weert (Netherlands) and Tamara Froud (UK) to help get this whale in shape for his Big Splash festival glory! As well, one of Britain’s leading mosaic artists, Carrie Reichardt, will be designing a section of the Whale although is unable to visit and take part in the project in person. All artists were involved in The 1st International Urban Mosaic Intervention in 2014, that took place in Chile earlier this year, and have continued to collaborate on projects since.

There’s still plenty of whale to mosaic and go around, so be sure to pop in to The Project Space on the day for a chance to talk and learn from International professionals in the heart of the city, working tirelessly to put something back into Newport.  We’ll still be running out #namethewhale competition too!  If you can think of a name for our whaley mate, get in touch – winner to be announced at The Big Splash festival weekend.
